Over 50 years in business and technology, from IBM mainframes and keypunch cards to multi-million-dollar projects in 30-plus countries. Now home in Kingsville, Ontario, helping local small businesses grow with the right smart digital doorways.

The story behind the stories

You probably want to know who I am, and why you should listen to what I have to say about growing your business.

Fair enough. The short version: I've got an MBA in Information Systems Management and more than 5 decades building, fixing, and running technology for businesses on 4 continents and in more than 30 countries. These days I put all of it to work for small businesses right here in Kingsville, Ontario and the Windsor-Essex Region.

From keypunch cards to the PC era

I graduated from St. Clair College in Windsor in 1976, back when IBM mainframes and keypunch cards were state of the art. I started in IT operations at Mobil Oil and Alberta Energy and worked my way up, learning early that nothing matters more than a system you can rely on.

In 1981 I implemented IBM PROFS, one of the very first enterprise email and word-processing systems. A few years later, as IT Manager at Prentice-Hall Canada, I built their first in-house IT department and led one of the country's earliest large-scale PC rollouts, putting computers on desks before most companies knew what to do with them.

3 decades around the world

After IT management roles in Toronto and Calgary, the work went global. From Geneva, I directed the operations of IATA's worldwide computer systems, including a migration of 150 users across 15 countries. In Australia, I ran the financial settlement systems for the airline industry, clearing $3.3 billion a year between 2,000 travel agents and 200 airlines, on time and on budget.

From there I spent 3 decades consulting across more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, leading teams of up to 30 people and delivering multi-million-dollar projects. I steered Hewlett-Packard's Y2K crisis program across 28 European countries and brought it through with full stability. Along the way I learned how technology really lands in a business. It either earns its keep or it gets in the way.

Coming home to a new purpose

In 2019 I came back to Canada and settled in Kingsville, Ontario. I started over as White Beard Solutions, positioning myself as a Master Business Craftsman rather than just another IT consultant or web designer, and that craft is exactly what Doorways Into Your Business is built on today.

After a career spent on enterprise systems for global organizations and non-profits, I found the work I care about most is right down the street: helping the local owners who keep our community running.

The Craftsman Code

Craft First

Tools do not fix a business. A solid structure does. Most tech stacks fail for one reason: nobody owns the install. I own it, from the first measurement to the final trim.

I build like a craftsman:

  1. I start with the frame.
  2. I check the fit.
  3. I install the hinges.
  4. I test the swing.
  5. Then I finish the trim.

I keep the build practical. I keep the steps clear. Smart Digital Doorways should feel simple to the customer and steady to the owner.

What that means for you

Plain language, and only the tools you need.

I won't overwhelm you with jargon, and I won't sell you tools you don't need. Depending on what your business actually needs, the answer might be a website, SMS marketing, a booking system, a simple CRM, or an AI agent that answers your customers around the clock, matched to the job rather than the trend.

Here's how I measure success. Your business grows, and you're freed from firefighting so you can focus on the work, and the family, that matter most. Every article on this site comes from real, hands-on work with local business owners.
